On September 27th, after a two-week “intermission” caused by a technical problem, the Balboa Theatre once again rang to the sounds of its “heartbeat”, a beautifully-restored 1929 Wonder Morton Organ. One of only four such remaining instruments in existence, the organ is the gift of the Balboa Theatre Foundation to the people of San Diego.  The original performance date of September 13th was preceded by a brunch held onstage for many of the Foundation’s longest-term supporters and included the presentation of special recognition to the Event’s Honorary Chair, Polly Henderson, for her many years of friendship, advice and support. “Polly’s contributions over the years have helped us immensely” said Event Chair Sue Raffee Barrett. “Act III gave us a perfect opportunity to thank her publicly.”

The patience of the hundreds in attendance at the original concert date was paid off on the 27th, when the curtain parted and the concert began with Chris Gorsuch, the 2008 American Theatre Organ Society’s Organist of the Year, rising from the pit on the bench, playing “Just One of Those Things”. Chris was joined by Jelani Eddington and Russ Peck in presenting a concert that showcased the incredible versatility of the instrument, featuring such varied selections as Cole Porter, a song from the Fred Astaire film “Daddy Long Legs”, Steven Sondheim, and Olivia Newton-John, as well as the Laurel & Hardy silent film “Liberty” accompanied by Russ Peck. The performance closed magnificently with Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A, with Jelani on the Steinway Model D, Russ on tympani and Chris at the Wonder Morton filling the role of the orchestra. Much to the delight of the audience, the performers returned to their places to offer “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” as an encore.

We hope that those of you in attendance enjoyed the show and we appreciate all of the understanding, patience and kind words offered.  Should you be interested in hearing about future events, sign up for on our e-mail list by sending to info@thebalboatheatre.org.
